Deep Work

By: Cal Newport - Read: August 4, 2022 - Rating: 6/10

It is a productivity book. So going into it, I expected to be met with generic studying advice. But Deep Work actually gave practical advice on how to do the deep work.

Cal organizes the book in two neat sections: The Idea (1) and The Rules (2). Press the title for my notes.

My Notes

In the first section, he explains why deep work is valuable and why the succesful have it. He gives examples with Sigmund Freud and how he structured his time for deep, unfragmented fragments. He became successful. He also references Bill Gates and his tweets addressing deep problems.

In the second section, he gives practical advice on how to do the deep work. I tried them in real life. And frankly--they worked out. One big rule was not using social media. Absolutely locking it away. It was great.

Some may find the idea pretty self-explanatory and not worth writing a book about, but for my 15 year old self, it changed the way I study.
